Well, that's not exactly true. It's okay if to wear sometimes when using it to show your faith in a subtle way (I think that's what Christian is doing here) or like U2's Bono (a non-Catholic) who proudly displays a rosary given to him by John Paul II. It's certainly disrepectful to wear it for fassion or for no reason. You can read more here if you want: Plug for Catholic Answers message board
