Batwoman hero returns as lesbian

Uh... someone clear something up for me. I thought I had finally figured it out that there is NO Batwoman. (I thought.) There's a CatWOMAN. There's a BatGIRL. But no Batwoman. So has there always been a Batwoman? Is she just an older version of Batgirl? It's so confusing.

And don't even get me started on Super Boy.

EDIT: Some of the mystery is solved. This BBC article ends with the following paragraph: "Batwoman, who first appeared in July 1956, has not been seen since September 1979 when she was killed by the League of Assassins and the Bronze Tiger."
