T. R. Hixson is a sketch comedy writer that has some jokes aired on Comedy Central. This is the first short story he’s ever sent out for publication. On most Halloween’s you will find him dressed as Frodo from Lord of the Rings.
How long have you been writing and what got you started?
I have been writing for 20 years on and off. I started writing screenplays and have recently switched to short stories. “Séance for Dummies” was originally a sketch comedy idea that evolved over time to what it is now.
What is the best piece of advice you have for new writers?
Have simple goals, start with short stories, read a lot, and don’t be discouraged by rejection.
What is your favorite type of fiction and who are your favorite authors?
My favorite type of fiction is Horror. My favorite authors are Joe Hill, Robert R. McCammon, Stephen King, and Clive Barker.
How do you measure success when it comes to your writing?
I used to have lofty goals when it came to success, but now all I want is for people to read it and have a reaction to the writing. Good or bad, I just want to evoke some kind of emotion.
Are you an outliner or discovery writer? Or somewhere in between?
I fit in somewhere in between. I have a beginning and I have an ending in sight before I start to write. I usually take a long walk and play scenarios, but as I write I let the characters guide me and occasionally I will have a different ending than I had in mind.
How do you deal with rejections?
I try to use rejections as a motivator, to ask the hard questions on my writing. Why is this not connecting the way it is supposed to? Was this the right outlet for this story?
Do you ever get criticism from family or friends who don’t understand your passion?
Yes, because they tend to be more honest. I think you also need the people that do know your passion, and compare and contrast both likes and unlikes.
What are your writing goals for the next twelve months?
Write more short stories and seek publication. “Séance for Dummies” was more humorous than supernatural, I’m going to attempt a more horror/supernatural story but still with humor.
What book are you reading right now?
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is a science fiction heavy on science but with great moments of humor.
Is there anything you’d like to plug?
I’m a reader before I’m a writer. I have a book blog that I’ve been writing for about 3 years now. https://readingwithmyeyes.wordpress.com
